1979 chevy camaro

A great and must read article: 1979 camaro

Q: how much would a 1979 chevy camaro z28 cost if used?
i really want to restore one and get it as my first car.

A: I wouldn’t pay more than 2500 if it’s mechanically sound and doesn’t have outrageous mileage. The Blue Book Value of an 89 (it won’t go older than 1989) that is in even excellent condition is only 1700, and thats figuring it have 100000 miles or less. Pay a little to buy, and spend even more to fix it up. That’s the only way to make it a good first car. have fun.

A: Do not attempt this alone as you have never done it before. A Chilton’s or Haynes manual will give you the procedures but you need the correct tools for the job as well. Find a local back yard mechanic experienced in this and shell out the money WHILE YOU WATCH and get some experience in this procedure.

Q: I need tips for tuning/upgrading my 79 Camaro.?
I’m buying a 1979 Chevy Camaro Berlietta. It has the stock Crate 350 with newer intake (don’t know much about it yet), and brand new exhaust system (Flowmaster). 117K miles on original engine. What should my first steps be on a budget to up the performance on this car, while keeping it smog friendly in California, let’s say under $1,000?

A: First I would get an engine with less than 117k on it.

Q: What year is the Chevy Camaro Shia drives at the beginning of Transformers?
I’ve googled it, and literally came up with people saying things from 1976-1979.

A: It’s a ‘76. It recently sold on ebay for 30k.

Q: Need Chevy Camaro help?
Okay, I have the choice of buying either a 1979 Camaro Z-28 or a 1985 Camaro IROC-Z. I like them both but I can only pick one. In your opinon, which do you think would be better to own?

A: OK I can give you the best answer here cause I have owned both models. Yes both are great cars, and both are easily upgraded into some serious tire spinners, with the difference being only cost of upgraded performance parts.
Both are uni-body designed and have frame connectors available to stiffen the flex from launching out of the hole, but the real difference is in the engine bays. True the 79 has plenty of room for a big block swap, and unimaginable engine combinations available to you, but the 85 has one advantage.. the EFI In fact, some of the models came with the 350CID with the MPTI intakes. If the 85 you’re looking at, has the intake with equal length runners ( like spiderlegs ), then you really should consider it.
The model I bought used had that engine with a bad rear main oil leak. Me and a friend rebuilt the engine completely from the bottom to the top, and after changing out the rods, pistons, crankshaft, and using the Edelbrock preformer series heads, camshaft, lifters valve springs the works.. Changed the injectors over to higher psi models and changed the fuel pump over to a high volume.. that car came alive
Actually dyno’d at 447 hp and 490 trq… and talk about making the mustangs eat some dust.. oh yeah I miss that car.

Q: What is the length and diameter of a 200 turbo hydro matic transmission?
I burnt up the old transmission on my 1979 chevy camaro and i am looking to buy a used transmission this way i have correct dimensions for the torque converter shaft

A: Call an auto salvage yard. They have a set of books that lists interchangeable parts.

Q: If I cut my drive shaft shorter will it ruin my fuel economy?
I have a 1979 Chevy Camaro and i blew up the old transmission. I have a new turbo hydromatic 350, but the tail is too long will cutting the drive shaft shorter ruin my fuel economy?

A: your removing weight and that helps (although it is nothing you will see) it will not hurt your gas mileage in any way.

you may want to consider a lighter stronger shaft all together it is just a simple measurement from u-joint to u-joint
i have extended, shortened, and have had shafts with very extreme travel and of course balanced.

in your case instead of paying for the labor to shorten the shaft you may consider a lighter stronger aluminum shaft

of course this is just a recommendation
the difference in price ($200 for shorten and balance and paint exp) may be a hundred more but you are getting a new stronger shaft that will slide in place like stock instead of sliding that old shaft into place
if you do go with the old shaft. Make sure they grind down the surface weld on the weights prime and paint the old modified shaft a good drive shaft shop should do this without you asking but I have come across some that i have had to hand the shaft back and tell them to do it right.

goodluck

Q: Im Restoring a 1979 Camaro some tips maybe?
i have a 1979 camaro and im restoring it and i need to some tips and some answers for trouble shooting. its not the original 350 small block that was it in i have another that was from a two truck but its still chevy the engine has been modified tho i have headers on it and a edelbrock carburator and intake manifold but i have one problem the starter is like grinding on the fly wheel i tried shiming it but it didnt help i prob should just get a new one but there is another haha one cylinder i think is miss fireing i dont no if its the spark plug or maybe the wire i dont no i have to check but i dont really no how to fix it and im hopeing that its not a valve thats even worse but help me out please maybe some good websites i could order free cataloges for chevy small blocks or camaro idk please help me!!!

A: The starter grinding problem may just be the starter drive is bad and needs replacing. As for the cylinder misfiring, with the vehicle running put on a pair of gloves and pull the wires off one by one and replace them. When you pull off the wire the engine should slow down if the cylinder is firing. If it doesn’t check the plug, if the plug looks good try putting a screwdriver in the plug wire and placing it close to a good ground while turning the motor over it should spark. If it doesn’t spark it may be a bad wire. Or it may be that the cap or rotor is bad check the distributor cap and rotor for bad contacts or cracks. As far as it being a bad valve it either will backfire through the carb if its an intake valve or out the exhaust if it is a bad exhaust valve. It may also be that the valves need to be adjusted, a bent push rod, or a collapsed valve lifter. Hope this may help you with the problem.

Q: Can you put a 318 in a Camaro?
I have these 2 cars laying around, a 1979 Dodge St. Regis and a 1989 Chevy Camaro RS (The 2.8l v6). The Dodge has body rot so it’s pretty much worthless, but the Camaro has a good solid body with a blown motor. Please no negative comments on why I would do this. I’m broke, these are what I have to work with.
Thanks JF I’ll end up figuring something out.

A: It would be a real booger bear to do. GM to GM or Dodge to Dodge isn’t that bad but Dodge to GM so much to change, once you get the engine and transmission in you’ll have to get another drive shaft too not to mention alot of wiring work. It’s definitely not a cost effective endeavor.
