Q: How much would a 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible and a 1963 Mercury Comet cost?
How much would these two cars cost? A 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible and a 1963 Mercury Comet. I want to know the price for each seperately. If you can, give me some links.

A: Mustang – ten to forty thousand..

   http://www.searchtheentirecraigslist.com/results.html?cx=002519136709929005474%3Ak0bfwxemloc&cof=FORID%3A9&ie=UTF-8&q=1965+mustang+convertible&sa=Search

Q: Where is a good place to buy a 1965 Ford Mustang online besides ebay motors?
I am from Texas and am looking to buy a 1965 Ford Mustang. I’v checked ebay motors and craigslist. My budget is around $5000. Any tips?

A: You’re kind of limiting yourself by just looking online.

Here is a site devoted to Mustangs:

http://www.mustangclassifieds.com/index.php?page=search&cid=10&s_res=AND

As already mentioned, Autotrader.com might have some Mustangs. You can also access many newspaper classifieds online.

You can go to a bookstore and pick up a copy of Hemmings Motor News (a great source for cars and parts).

If you were to expand your search, you can usually find Mustangs at swap meets. Sometimes you’ll find a good deal, sometimes not.

Q: How do I replace the floor in my 1965 Ford Mustang?
I’m restoring a 1965 Ford Mustang. I’ve stripped it down to a rolling chassis, and in the process discovered that the floor panels are rusted through in several places. I’ve also discovered evidence that the car had been in a front-end collision. I wanted to do a lot of the body work myself, but now I’m worried that cutting out the entire floor will cause the chassis to bend. I’m also worried that the chassis may already distorted due to the collision. How do I replace the floor without warping the chassis, and how can I be sure that the chassis is straight?

A: check with yearone I believe they sell floor pans, just cut out the old one, clean up the area and have the new pan welded in place.

I think the website is www.yearone.com they have a mustang specific catalog

Q: How do you remove the ignition cylinder on a 1965 Ford Mustang?
I am restoring a 1965 Ford Mustang and I am having a hard time removing the ignition cylinder?

A: To remove the key cylinder you have to turn the key to the accessory position, stick a paperclip into the little pinhole on the face of the key cylinder and then turn the key around a little further in the counter-clockwise direction and it will come out.

Q: How much is a 1965 Ford Mustang worth today?
I’m interested in purchasing a 1965 Ford Mustang from a classified ad in the newspaper. The ad reads, “65 Mustang, 289, A-code, 4bbl auto, ac, good cond, runs xlnt. $4500.” Is this a reasonable price? (I haven’t been to see the car yet myself, but considering the seller is telling the truth and there truly are little repairs/it runs excellently…) Thanks!!

A: It sounds good. A code is a base 4 bbl V8. Is it a coupe, conv. or 2+2. Its make a big difference in price. A excellent condition car is price from $5000 to 20,000. Get a independent appraiser to check it out.

Q: what are the chances of me owning a 1965 Ford Mustang?
I’m now 20 years old. I’ve been wanting one since I was 15. I have my own licence now. I’m dreaming about buying my first car.

What are the chances of me owning one ? I want to drive around town in it and impress girls.

One thing I want to do before I die is to drive a 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback.

A: i don’t agree with the first answer. i drive a 68 gt500 convertible. plenty of girls are impressed and love the car. everybody turns and stares. if you really want one, take your time save your money and buy one or restore one. still less expensive than most new cars and a better in vestment because they increase in value not depreciate.

Q: how to remove the steering column on a 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible?
how to remove the steering column on a 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible?

A: disconnect the linkage at the steering box,
disconnect the mounts under the dash,
disconnect all electrical connections,
pull

Q: Should I paint my 1965 Ford Mustang before I work on the rest of the car?
I have 1965 Ford Mustang Coupe. It it runs but it needs some work done to it. I am not sure if I should get it painted before I start working on the rest of it or not. I have been told to get it painted first because they will strip it and gut it so they can sand blast it and paint it. I was also told to get it painted last because you don’t want the paint job to get messed up while you are working on it. I have looked through many different books and nothing has told me which to start with. Can anyone give me some guidance?

A: Do all the mechanical work first and make sure it all works and fits well. Then take it all apart and do the body and paint. Put it back together, add interior and glass, enjoy the car.

Q: How much (rough estimate) should is my 1965 Ford Mustang worth?
I have a 1965 Ford Mustang, it’s a 200, inline 6, automatic.
I’m the 3rd owner.
It’s not perfect, has never been restored, but the body is fine. There’s NO rust on the vehicle.
It was a Calif car (1st owner, 25+ years), then TX.
I bought the vehicle in FL from the 2nd owner in 1998 and drove it off & on over the past decade.
It runs but needs a tune-up, as the car has been garaged for the past 4 years straight and not driven at all in that time.

This car is my baby and my dream was to restore it and get a true automotive education from it. Dashing that dream is not something I am really prepared or happy about doing.
Life has made other plans, however, so I should probably sell this car.

I am not quite sure how to go about selling it, or what a fair price for the vehicle would be. Please respond with your suggestions as to how to get it appraised or figure out its market value.
Also, can anyone recommend a good website for selling this?

I paid $1500 for it in ‘98

A: Edmonds.com…………#########

Q: Door color with a red interior color for a 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback?
I have a 1965 Ford Mustang with an exterior color of wimbeldon white and an interior color of bright red. The seats are red. I want to know what color the doors are supposed to be painted from the factory.

A: black, brown or a white and red mix what i mean is red with white strip or the opersite

Q: How much would a 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback Cammer cost me restored?
I’m a real fan of old-school american muscle cars and i want to know how much a 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback Cammer would cost me IN GOOD CONDITION…

here a pic:

http://www.allfordmustangs.com/photopost/data/3224/medium/104201965-Ford-Mustang-Fastback-Cammer-SA-1024×768.jpg

thanks,
jonathan

A: A Ford “cammer” generally refers to a 427 SOHC motor – and the engine alone is worth 5 or 6 figures.

Q: Upgrade the engine in my 1965 Ford Mustang?
I have a 1965 ford mustang with a 200 ci 6 cyl engine and i would like to upgrade this as much as i can for 3000 dollars what options are open for me sry i dont know that much about cars.

A: This is a going to be a learning experience for you. Your main constriction is the money. You can MAYBE buy all the parts to make a proper conversion to a V8 since upgrading the suspension, brakes and cooling is also required but you will need to do ALL the work yourself since you have no more money.

Being “i dont know that much about cars”, this may be a stretch for you.

You can also visit Clifford and get some go-fast parts for your car and you can afford the help of a mechanic to put it on for you. And it will be a more unique ride than every one else.

http://www.cliffordperformance.net/

Q: Which 1965 Ford Mustang model is better?
All things equal, restored, etc. which 1965 Mustang is worth more, an automatic 6 cylinder Fastback, a 8 cylinder, manual coupe, or a 6 cylinder automatic convertible?

A: In this order, convertible, 2+2, and then the coupe .. the convertible will probably be left alone, while the 2+2 (correct name) will get the V8 restorod treatment.. Coupes, even with the V8 are only worth half of what a 2+2 goes for..

By actual book value the two are about equal according to OLD CARS PRICE GUIDE. So the 2+2 is catching up..

I have a convertible and a 2+2, and I don’t buy coupes anymore after owning 4..

Q: I need a 1965 ford mustang fastback in california?
I need a 1965 ford mustang fastback fully restored that is in california

A: What’s your budget? Are you interested in a ‘66?
Here’s one on ebay from San Diego:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1965-MUSTANG-GT-2-2-FASTBACK_W0QQitemZ230321408916QQihZ013QQcategoryZ6236QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

This is just a short list, a bit more time will provide more results.
Prepare to spend $30-40K

Q: How much would it cost to ship a 1965 ford mustang from Chicago to Dublin,Ireland?
Do you need to hire a container or cover?

A: Why are you shipping the car over sea If you sold it on ebay you should have told them to arrange for shipping

Q: how much would a 1979 chevy camaro z28 cost if used?
i really want to restore one and get it as my first car.

A: I wouldn’t pay more than 2500 if it’s mechanically sound and doesn’t have outrageous mileage. The Blue Book Value of an 89 (it won’t go older than 1989) that is in even excellent condition is only 1700, and thats figuring it have 100000 miles or less. Pay a little to buy, and spend even more to fix it up. That’s the only way to make it a good first car. have fun.

Q: How many miles per gallon does a 1979 Chevy Camaro get?

A: lol , well any where from 8 to 25, depends on engine size, automatic or manual trans, gear ratio, and of course driving style.

Q: how much would you pay for 4 rims to 1979 Chevy Camaro Z28 in great condition?
my dad said i could sell them but i dont know how much

A: look on E bay to see if anyone else is selling and for how much. craigs list also.

Q: 1979 Chevy Camaro vs 1968 Dodge Charger?
Which would is better fully fixed and street legal The 1979 Chevy Camaro vs 1968 Dodge Charger?
And Which one is better over all out of these choices below:
1.1968/69 Dodge Charger
2.1972 Dodge Challenger
3.1969 Shelby Gt 500
4.1968 Mustang Fastback
5.1979 Chevy Camaro

A: The Charger should destory the ‘79. You’re talking about 175hp in the top of the line Z28. The Charger will also be worth significantly more.

Out of your 5, probably the Shelby GT 500.

Q: how much paint is needed to paint a 1979 Chevy Camaro?
total paint including reducer
need 4 to 5 coats

A: Just get a gallon! And all the other stuff to go with it 120.00$ How many coats do you want?

Q: i have a 1979 chevy camaro and the carb caught fire is it bad to drive it?
i have dropped the engine last august and im not sure if im still using my carb of the new engines carb but it is burnt……i need to know if i can drive it????

A: Take it apart to see if there is any permanent damage. If not, you should be good to go. If so, replace it. If you are in doubt, replace it.

Q: where in illinois can i buy a 1979-1981 chevy camaro?

A: Check out http://chicago.craigslist.org/cgi-bin/search?areaID=11&subAreaID=&query=chevy+camaro&catAbbreviation=sss

Q: chevy camaro 1979 z28?
have solid lifter and cam just did a fresh rebuild dropped motor in and now i need to set the vavles and have no cule i have the cam card but i just dont know the process of the rockers and stufff and i feel very uneasy about doingit myself as i know you can really jack things up and i have never uesd a feeler gauge ethier. can any1 help me set the lash on my new toy thanks

A: Do not attempt this alone as you have never done it before. A Chilton’s or Haynes manual will give you the procedures but you need the correct tools for the job as well. Find a local back yard mechanic experienced in this and shell out the money WHILE YOU WATCH and get some experience in this procedure.

Q: I need tips for tuning/upgrading my 79 Camaro.?
I’m buying a 1979 Chevy Camaro Berlietta. It has the stock Crate 350 with newer intake (don’t know much about it yet), and brand new exhaust system (Flowmaster). 117K miles on original engine. What should my first steps be on a budget to up the performance on this car, while keeping it smog friendly in California, let’s say under $1,000?

A: First I would get an engine with less than 117k on it.

Q: What year is the Chevy Camaro Shia drives at the beginning of Transformers?
I’ve googled it, and literally came up with people saying things from 1976-1979.

A: It’s a ‘76. It recently sold on ebay for 30k.

Q: Need Chevy Camaro help?
Okay, I have the choice of buying either a 1979 Camaro Z-28 or a 1985 Camaro IROC-Z. I like them both but I can only pick one. In your opinon, which do you think would be better to own?

A: OK I can give you the best answer here cause I have owned both models. Yes both are great cars, and both are easily upgraded into some serious tire spinners, with the difference being only cost of upgraded performance parts.
Both are uni-body designed and have frame connectors available to stiffen the flex from launching out of the hole, but the real difference is in the engine bays. True the 79 has plenty of room for a big block swap, and unimaginable engine combinations available to you, but the 85 has one advantage.. the EFI In fact, some of the models came with the 350CID with the MPTI intakes. If the 85 you’re looking at, has the intake with equal length runners ( like spiderlegs ), then you really should consider it.
The model I bought used had that engine with a bad rear main oil leak. Me and a friend rebuilt the engine completely from the bottom to the top, and after changing out the rods, pistons, crankshaft, and using the Edelbrock preformer series heads, camshaft, lifters valve springs the works.. Changed the injectors over to higher psi models and changed the fuel pump over to a high volume.. that car came alive
Actually dyno’d at 447 hp and 490 trq… and talk about making the mustangs eat some dust.. oh yeah I miss that car.

Q: What is the length and diameter of a 200 turbo hydro matic transmission?
I burnt up the old transmission on my 1979 chevy camaro and i am looking to buy a used transmission this way i have correct dimensions for the torque converter shaft

A: Call an auto salvage yard. They have a set of books that lists interchangeable parts.

Q: If I cut my drive shaft shorter will it ruin my fuel economy?
I have a 1979 Chevy Camaro and i blew up the old transmission. I have a new turbo hydromatic 350, but the tail is too long will cutting the drive shaft shorter ruin my fuel economy?

A: your removing weight and that helps (although it is nothing you will see) it will not hurt your gas mileage in any way.

you may want to consider a lighter stronger shaft all together it is just a simple measurement from u-joint to u-joint
i have extended, shortened, and have had shafts with very extreme travel and of course balanced.

in your case instead of paying for the labor to shorten the shaft you may consider a lighter stronger aluminum shaft

of course this is just a recommendation
the difference in price ($200 for shorten and balance and paint exp) may be a hundred more but you are getting a new stronger shaft that will slide in place like stock instead of sliding that old shaft into place
if you do go with the old shaft. Make sure they grind down the surface weld on the weights prime and paint the old modified shaft a good drive shaft shop should do this without you asking but I have come across some that i have had to hand the shaft back and tell them to do it right.

goodluck

Q: Im Restoring a 1979 Camaro some tips maybe?
i have a 1979 camaro and im restoring it and i need to some tips and some answers for trouble shooting. its not the original 350 small block that was it in i have another that was from a two truck but its still chevy the engine has been modified tho i have headers on it and a edelbrock carburator and intake manifold but i have one problem the starter is like grinding on the fly wheel i tried shiming it but it didnt help i prob should just get a new one but there is another haha one cylinder i think is miss fireing i dont no if its the spark plug or maybe the wire i dont no i have to check but i dont really no how to fix it and im hopeing that its not a valve thats even worse but help me out please maybe some good websites i could order free cataloges for chevy small blocks or camaro idk please help me!!!

A: The starter grinding problem may just be the starter drive is bad and needs replacing. As for the cylinder misfiring, with the vehicle running put on a pair of gloves and pull the wires off one by one and replace them. When you pull off the wire the engine should slow down if the cylinder is firing. If it doesn’t check the plug, if the plug looks good try putting a screwdriver in the plug wire and placing it close to a good ground while turning the motor over it should spark. If it doesn’t spark it may be a bad wire. Or it may be that the cap or rotor is bad check the distributor cap and rotor for bad contacts or cracks. As far as it being a bad valve it either will backfire through the carb if its an intake valve or out the exhaust if it is a bad exhaust valve. It may also be that the valves need to be adjusted, a bent push rod, or a collapsed valve lifter. Hope this may help you with the problem.

Q: Can you put a 318 in a Camaro?
I have these 2 cars laying around, a 1979 Dodge St. Regis and a 1989 Chevy Camaro RS (The 2.8l v6). The Dodge has body rot so it’s pretty much worthless, but the Camaro has a good solid body with a blown motor. Please no negative comments on why I would do this. I’m broke, these are what I have to work with.
Thanks JF I’ll end up figuring something out.

A: It would be a real booger bear to do. GM to GM or Dodge to Dodge isn’t that bad but Dodge to GM so much to change, once you get the engine and transmission in you’ll have to get another drive shaft too not to mention alot of wiring work. It’s definitely not a cost effective endeavor.

Q: How much is a 1970 chevy camaro worth?
okay its a 70 chevy camaro with engine problems, not the original paint, has primer spots in ALOT of places, it has shaved door handles wich i know lowers the value, has no door panels on the inside, does not have the original front seats, does not have the original hood, has no side windows and is missing exterior chrome pieces. How much would u say its worth??? PLEASE ANSWER….

A: damn, all that sounds like is a project car. i hope you’re not buying that as a daily driver. no more than 6 to 7 hundred dollars in current condition. those interior parts are going to cost an arm leg and a small child…and are VERY hard to find. But when theyre 80% restored, the value can easily jump to around 13-14k. If you’re looking to restore this car, then by all means, go for it.

Q: im looking for a 1970-73 chevy camaro that is under 2,500,PROJECT CAR,one that you can fix up,anybody?
im only 14,but ive been in love with Chevy’s since i can remember,i know alot about cars, more than i should,my dad loves Chevy’s and has a 408 bb 1978 malibu that is a drag racer,im not some little rich kid that wants a cool looking car so i can look cool or sumthing,i really love camaro’s just cus they are very unique and down right badass, ima get a job so i can help pay for one,ive found ones for 3000$ but not worth it,they are exstreamly hard as hell to find for a good price,so please help me!!ill reward sumthin, whatever you reward on here,to who ever can find one for that price

A: 70-701/2-71-2-3 Are three different cars, Cheap?-look for a 75-81

Q: Pre- 1970 camaro trany conversion?
would it be hard to convert an automatic pre-1970 chevy camaro to a manual? can’t i just change the tranny while i do an engine swap at the same time? I want to put in a modern big-block v8, or smallblock from the ls series. It’s jus that even the really bad condition ones with manual mark up their prices so high. The automatic would open the range to more cars and auto seem to be cheaper onthe used car market

A: to change to manual trans you all clutch pedal and linkage bell housing shift linkage and drive sfaft . to change to late model engine big or small block you need engine complette with all wire and computer and ign switch and fuel tank you will need to run fuel return line to tank if you plan to run inject if you plan to run carb on late engine you will need to change ign system to hei so make shure engine has distrib drive some tpi engine have no place for distrib or drive off oil pump if you plan on auto match engine to trans or use r trans and have trans shop modify to hyd lock up convertor 1 st and 2 nd gen cameros with 502 carb and t 5 or t6 are nice road cars lots of power and with alum heads and manifolds water pump etc weigh little more than 350 i have 97 with 502 6 speed richmond holley inj car air and ps work

Q: 1970 ford mustang mach 1 vs 2010 Chevy Camaro?
which one wins

A: The 2010 Camaro will win in most any racing format against the Mustang. It is lighter and it makes similar power. If you want to get some more ponies from the Mustang, check us out at:

Q: I want to buy a Camaro but I can’t decide whether I should buy a 1970 or 1969? Which car is better looking?
I can’t decide whether I should buy a 1969 Chevy Camaro or a 1970. I am going to fix them up the same regardless. The problem is that I can buy the 1970 now, no problem because my neighbor has one that I can buy. But after I saw the 1969 I thought it was better looking and I felt like I should buy that one instead. But I don’t know where there is one for sale and I don’t want to risk my chances of not buying the ‘70 and waiting for a ‘69 to pass. I need help looking for a ‘69.

Q: I’m trying to remember a movie from the 1970’s where a guy had this orange chevy camaro with a card on doors!
The card was either an ace of spades or jack of spades or something like that. Real action of car chases with police!

A: was it Eat my Dust?

Q: Comprehensive Repair guide for Camaro?
Looking for a good comprehensive repair guide for a 1970 Chevy Camaro. Got any advice on what author is best?

A: Best place to go is free and great bunch of people there. www.nastyz28.com Its an all second gen camaro site/message board with everything you could want to know and more

Q: i have 1980 camaro rs how do i put 1970 front end on it? really needing help?
hey yall i got a 1980 chevy camaro RS and dont like the way the the front nose looks and im wanting to change out the front to a 1970 how would i do that and what would i need? any advice is helpfull and also prices and all thanks

A: it would be cheaper and easier to buy a 1970 camaro. it takes about 2-3 grand in labor and fabrication to do so at the very least.

Q: I like drag racing its what want to be when i grow up?
I was in chicago for the summer i went drag strip call route 66 it was awesome a 1970 chevy camaro went about 10 seconds flat I hope the kids who are a big fan drag racing can talk to me Brandon lee

A: it’s fairly easy to get started in drag racing. start small at first. get a car (or truck like me…lol), hop it up, and go on an open drag night at your local drag strip. that’s where you get practice and experience. it’s easy to get started, but costs a lot.

Q: will cops stop you for side pipes on your muscle car?
I want to get a 1970-1981 Chevy camaro and i’d like to put Shelby cobra style sidepipes on it, but it’s gonna be loud, this i already know, but are cops willing to let things slip if it’s a collector car because i see plenty of rods with side pipes out there, and cops never seem to have a problem with them.
Anybody have an idea?

A: it depends on the state your in

they need to keep EGT low

they must have a proper cytylst converter

i cant wait to see it good luck

Q: How much can I as for a 1970 Chevy Custom 20 4X4 pick up?
The truck is in pretty bad shape, but its complete. It only has one dent ( a pretty big one on the side of the bed).

I dont want to get ripped off like a friend of mine. He sold an old camaro for a few hundred bucks and later found out that it was a classic. At the time he didnt understand why the buyer drove about 200 miles the same day to pick up the car.
its got a 350.
it has disk brakes too.

i dont think its a short bed, but i also dont think it the original bed.
eldorado…i say he got ripped off because it turned out that the car was worth thousands as it was. i cant remember how much, but my friend did not know what he had and the guy did not say anything. but oh well.

A: Viajero, you have a 3/4 ton (C20 stands for 3/4 ton,C30 is a one ton, and C/10 is a half ton) Does the truck’s 4X4 work? 3 or 4 spd?AIr, pwr st, pwr brks, pwr wdws? Is there a piece of sheetmetel that is not rusted thru? Is it a 2 bbl or 4 bbl carb? There are a lot of this model trucks still around and GM still carries parts for them Is the Glass perfect, no milkiness or cracks? If it runs and , whatever is not working or rusted thru or if the 4X4 works, someone might give a Grand for it. Your friend’s Camaro may have had a couple good panels, or the dash was good, or possibly the glass was good, could be why the guy drove 200 mi. to buy it for a parts car, as I have done on quite a few cars. I gave $200 for a rustbucket 1950 Ford just to get the chrome off of it back in 1987. So just cause your friend sold a Camaro “Classic”( they make complete body kits for those too) may not mean he got “ripped off”. I have a 1969 C/10 Chevy truck, long bed and am interested in a CST truck for the tach and bench seat with an armrest

Q: what the difference?
between a 1968 mercury comet and a 1970 chevy camaro?

A: The 1968 Mercury Comet is a fine automobile and will go down in history as a collectable treasure.

Now, have you ever heard of the Dodge Superbee? Well, the 1970 Chevy Camaro is a Firebird Wannabee.

Q: car help…?
im looking for a car that looks similar to one of these
[ya know...the classic cars]

1963 Mercury Comet
1967-1968 Chevy Impala
1967 Mustang
1970 Chevy Camaro

but i need it to be more updated.
more economically better.

says my parents lol.

have they done that or no?
it’d really help if someone could name cars that look like that but have been remade like for 2008 or 2007 or something.
or the 1973 Dodge Charger

p.s. im looking for cars that look like that or closely similar.

A: Have you seen the new camaro? nice. But id stay away from firstyear models. I had a 05 mustang, loved it, but had some minor defects that have been since worked out in the later years.

as for your arguement, you can tell the Ps that an older model is easier to work on, the parts are cheap and you will learn a lot to work on it…

Q: Muscle cars chevy dodge 70’s?
What do yall think about the 1970 dodge challenger r/t vs the 69 chevy camaro? What are the pros and cons of both vehicles? powerwise too.

A: The Challenger R/T is slightly rarer and consequently will be more expensive. About $30,000-$40,000+ for a decent example regardless of options.

A nice, non original ‘69 Camaro can be found with just about any Chevy small block or big block for $20,000-$25,000.

The Camaros are more commonly found with engine performance upgrades than the Challenger. Mopar guys are generally more purists than Chevy guys.

Even a Challenger with a stock 440 Magnum is a really powerful car! They’ve got 375 horsepower and a stump pulling 480lb ft of torque right out of the factory. But it is common to find ‘69 Camaros with really nasty small blocks like 355s, 383 strokers, and even 400s. Some guys even put 454 big blocks in them(which they never cam with), and once and a while you’ll find one with a 396.

A great and must read article: 1996 toyota camry

Q: How much should I sell 1996 toyota camry with a locked engine for?
I’m looking to sell/get rid of my 1996 Camry since the engine locked up on it this past weekend. I recently put 1500 dollars worth of work into it with brand new brakes, tires, tune up, starter, struts and shocks. I don’t know if its worth anything now. But everything else was in stunning condition. I don’t feel like spending the 2k to get a new engine in it. How much could I sell it for random parts and whatnot.

A: Car over 10 years old with a locked engine.
won’t get much, maybe sell it in parts if you can go through that

Q: Is there a governor I can put on my 1996 Camry?
My sons have lead feet. I’d like to reduce the probability of them getting speeding tickets or getting into an accident by installing a governor on the 1996 Camry I’m getting them. My trusty mechanic surprised me by saying he knew of nothing on the market. He’s gotta be wrong! Help!

A: Here is the best Governor,
Governor Mom & Dad,
Set the rules and the limits, cross the lines and you lose the PRIVELIDGE. Driving is not a right…Drive right or walk.
Set the limits..I did with 3 sons. OK one or two tickets and that was it. they had no more as they knew the car would turn into a pumpkin. By setting the limits you are making them safe drivers as well as letting them get the experience. If you can’t trust them before they drive, Make them earn the privelidge…Don’t think you have to supply the wheels…you don’t, you have a car…
Officer Dave,
I don’t want to visit your home with bad news…

Q: 1996 Toyota Camry V6 XLE starter problems?
I have a 1996 Camry, V6 XLE with about 175k miles on the clock. Recently when I started the car in the morning to go to work, the starter worked but it kept ‘clicking’ as the engine started. I was concerned so I turned the engine off, but the starter was still ‘clicking’. I had to take the key out of the ignition and disconnect the battery for the ‘clicking’ to stop. I recently bought a replacement starter, but I am wondering the cause of this problem as well as if there are any additional parts I may need to purchase to fix this problem. My boyfriend (an amateur mechanic) keeps telling me that I need to buy a new ignition switch or an igntition lock column. Every mechanic I have talked to over the phone says that I need a new starter, but I am not sure who to believe. Any ideas??

A: I had the same thing happen to me in a 1998 Suburban after I had bought a new battery for it. I didn’t think it was the starter or the solenoid because the clicking sound was coming from the steering column. It turned out to be the ignition lock cylinder, about $60.00 plus labor.

Q: How much would YOU pay for a 1996 Toyota Camry in excellent condition if you knew it had been in an accident?
I got hit in the parking lot, and it damaged the headlight and turning signal. It bent the front reinforcement bar, so the headlight doesn’t sit quite right, but the car is in otherwise excellent condition. Low miles(123,000), maintained at a toyota dealership, no smoking, perfect condition interior. It gets 24mpg in the city, and still has all the stock parts/not modified at all.

It is a 1996 Toyota Camry LE sedan

A: $700.00

Q: 1996 Camry LE 4 cyliner, clock and radio won’t turn on, everything else works fine?
I have a 1996 Toyota Camry LE 4 cylinder, just yesterday for some reason the clock and the radio both wont’ turn on anymore. The battery is working fine, I can turn on the car, turn on the light and all other stuff, just those two components (and the cigarette lighter adapter) that stopped turning on. Can anyone think of any reason why it’s doing that? Is it the fuse that might be burned out? Thanks

A: sounds like a fuse

Q: Why do I hear a loud bang noise from rear of my 1996 toyota camry on small bumps?
I’ve been hearing a loud banging noise every time my 1996 toyota camry hits even the smallest bump. The noise comes from rear side and it feels like my whole car pounds against the road? what can be the issue?

A: I’m no mechanic, I just play one on TV.

Sounds like the shocks are bad to me!

Q: 1996 toyota camry check engine light on and code is p0770?
I have 1996 toyota camry and the check engine light on with the code p0770 more then 6 months. It ran 100500 k miles. after viewing the forums I flushed the transmission fluid. But still the light is on. Please suggest me how I can get resolved this problem and where I can approach ?.
Yes the car is running good condition no issue. the problem is that i need to pass the emission test that I have to fix it.

A: Mad Jack is right about the “solenoid E malfunction”. i dont think he is right about a complete trans overhaul. Either one valve or one solenoid (E) is bad or plugged up. A good transmission tech should be able to drop the pan and get to the valve and solenoid pretty easy (there are several). check it, clean it or replace it. i think this is the valve that puts the trans into lock up mode over 50 mph. trans will still operate ok – it just wont go into full lock. If it locks up and wont unlock it couldnt shift or even move right. Beware that most trans shops dont really “work” on transmissions – they just want to flip in a rebuilt for a couple grand – that is all they know how to do. you have to find a real trans tech or look up the stuff yourself. if you get a service manual it is pretty staright forward.

Q: how much would it cost to replace cv boot on a 1996 toyota camry?
while putting in new break pads, my son noticed cv boot needed replacing. being lazy he put the new one on over the old one. is this as stupid as i think? how much will it cost for a mechanic to do it? 1996 toyota camry 4 cyl.

A: Probably around $300. Lots of labor involved. Let it go until the joint is trashed and have the whole axle replaced. Won’t cost much more. Maybe it will last until the rest of the car craps out with the split style boot on it.

Q: where can i get the gold “CAMRY” letters for the back of a 1996 toyota camry coupe?
I recently bought a 1996 Toyota Camry coupe that is missing the back letters on the trunk lid. Does anyone know where I can get these in gold?
I already called teh dealership and they told me that I have to buy the entire trunk lid, which would cost over $300.

A: I do not beleive they come in gold, but rather in chrome. There should be someone in your town to gold plate the emblems. This is what most dealerships do.

Q: Do 1996 Toyota Camry stock stereo have connection for amplifier?
I have a 2 channel amplifier and was wondering if i can connect it to a 1996 Toyota Camry stock stereo?

A: all you need is an RCA jack and the remote wire.
if you wanna keep the stock stereo just buy an adapter.

Q: How much does wiring job cost for a radio, clock, side mirrors on 1996 Toyota Camry cost?
I have a 1996 Toyota Camry LE and my son put a penny in the cigarette outlet when the car was off. The clock, radio, side mirrors(powered), and cig lighter are completely out. I’ve replaced all the 15’s and the one 20A fuses. And it still doesn’t work so now I’m thinking it’s a wiring problem. Anyone know of the cost for said job. Thank you ^_^

A: Pick up a Haynes or Chilton’s shop manual, then review the wiring diagram for that circuit. It is possible that it blew a fusible link, or a fuse you have not located. Very unlikely that the wiring is damaged, that’s what the fuses protect. An inexpensive Volt-ohm meter or 12V test light might prove handy.

Q: How do you change a headlight bulb in a 1996 Camry wagon?
I looked and it doesn’t look easy, like on one side it looks like you have to remove the battery? Am I looking in the wrong place. The replacement is a little bulb in a brown holder that is kind of J shaped. It is obvious that it is to plug in somewhere, but where? It can’t be that hard, can it? Help please

A: Some cars you do have to remove the battery to get at the bulb, just twist the old bulb off at the base and put the new one in, make sure you unplug the connector first by pressing a tab and then pulling it off

Q: I have a 1996 Camry, It will come on shake a liitle and then turn back off. Is is the EGR Valve?
Just replaced the fuel filter, used sea foam to clean it out and got a fuel pump around 2yrs ago. Does the EGR valve cause hestitation to start, a shaky engine and cut offs after being on for short periods of time?

A: That could be a sign the fuel pressure regulator is bad.

Fuel Pressure Regulator Failure Symptoms >>>
>Engine runs rough
>Engine stumbles or sputters
>Engine runs very rich – black smoke from the exhaust
>Engine will not start
>Engine starts but stalls shortly after startup
>Noisy fuel pump
>Noticeable decrease in fuel mileage

An easy way to test for an FPR leak in the vacuum side is to replace the vacuum line going into the FPR with a length of clear tubing. Now you’ll be able to see the leak as it happens. It will most likely show failure when your vacuum is at its lowest point, as in during acceleration.

Q: 1996 toyota camry. What kind of motor oil does it use?and how many qts does it use?
I just purchased a 1996 Toyota Camry without a Owner’s Manual.So i’m looking for informations regarding Motor Oil.What’s weight?Such as 5W-30,30W-40 or others.Thx.

A: I have a 93 and we use 10-30 and it takes 5 quarts, mine is a four cylinder.

Q: I have Toyota 1996 camry. I need to understand What is “Toyota Security” which is next to hand break
Does any one know the Mark “Toyota Security” which is next to hand break? What is the perpose for this?

A: I was about to ask the same question well dont know either and i do too have a 96 camry. but let me ask u somethin do u know why the break light wont go off. U know wen u use the handbreak theres some light that shows break. I think i pull the hanbreak once but put it back it messed up my breaks but now i fixed it and it still shows the break light.

A great and must read article: 1969 corvette

Q: Is soda blasting a good way to strip remove the paint on a 1969 Chevy Corvette?
I have a 1969 chevrolet corvette and we are in the process of restoring it. I have been researching different ways to remove the paint that is currently on the fiber glass body. Is soda blasting a good method? If you have any experience with soda blasting, what are the down sides to it? If it is a good method of paint removal, about how much would it cost to get the body soda blasted (everything except the front clip)?

A: Soda blast is a good way because it will not dig into the fiberglass. The only other way is to sand it all down by hand. Not sure of any down sides, never used it before. It will be harder to find someone that does soda blasting, its still kind new. Most places do sandblasting for around $60 to $90 an hour. So it could be expensive.

Q: what are the best spark plugs i can get for my 1969 chevy corvette with a 350 engine?
i have it 40 over with flat top JE pistons and a bigger cam with a wiend intake and a 600cfm holly carb

A: I started using ACDelco R45ts in all my chevy engines years ago, and have not found a better all round plug. You may need to adjust the heat range of the plug to better fit your engine.
http://www.acdelco.com/parts/sparkplugs/identification.jsp
I’m guessing you are running a HEI ignition. If you haven’t already done it, you will get a little more power if you use a high voltage coil and module in the distributor.

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=SUM%2D850030&autoview=sku

Q: What is the best way to remove paint from the body of a 1969 Corvette?
We have a 1969 Chevy Corvette and we’re in the process of restoring it. What is the best way to remove paint from the body? It is fiberglass. I’ve heard of people media blasting, sanding, stripping, etc. Whats the best and SAFEST way to remove paint from this fiberglass body? Another quick question, what color is the raw fiberglass on these cars? also if any of you have any pictures of good information that we could use to help us along the way we would really appreciate it.
what about soda blasting?

A: Sanding. Media Blasting since fiberglass is so soft, will totally screw up the surface as the media will not be able to tell the difference between paint and fiberglass. Sanding. Stripping solutions could also mess with the integrity of the fiberglass and give you more problems than you imagined. Also once you get it stripped completely, contact a good body shop that works with fiberglass, or a Corvette shop if there is one in your area. You will need to rework any areas with Spider Cracks, and older fiberglass gets dried out and needs to be reworked before you prime and paint it again. In other words, check with some shops for sure to see what you need to do to restore the life back into the fiberglass.
It is usually white or kind of cream in color. If you have black areas or anything like that, someone has probably patched it with marine materials.
I would suggest finding a Corvette Club near you and contacting them, and you will be surprised at the pointers they can give you, and where they can refer you to find other things. Parts, etc. You might be interested to know that the ‘69 also offered Seven (7) engine options. They were:

Base Engine: 350 cid with 300 horsepower @ 4800 rpm, Rochester four-barrell
Optional Engine #1: [RPO L46] 350 cid with 350 horsepower, , Rochester four-barrell
Optional Engine #2: [RPO L36] 427 cid with 390 horsepower @ 5400 rpm, Holley four-Barrell Carburetor
Optional Engine #3: [RPO L68] 427 cid with 400 horsepower, three Holley two-Barrell Carburetors
Optional Engine #4: [RPO L71] 427 cid with 435 horsepower @ 5800 rpm, three Holley two-Barrell Carburetors
Optional Engine #5: [RPO L88] 427 cid with 560 horsepower @ 6400 rpm, Holley four-Barrell Carburetor
Optional Engine #6: [RPO L89] 427 cid with 435 horsepower, Holley four-Barrell Carburetor
Optional Engine #7: [RPO LZL1] 427 cid with 430 horsepower, Holley four-Barrell Carburetor aluminum manifold

Q: I have a 1969 Chevy Corvette with a ZZ4 crate engine. What is the best Transmission for the ZZ4?
Here is the info on the engine…..

http://www.crateenginedepot.com/ZZ4-Crate-Engine-350CI-355HP-HO-with-Aluminum-Heads-24502609-P4C2.aspx

I want a Transmission with Overdrive but still would go for one without it…….anybody help please!!

A: Manual or Automatic?

For an Auto I’d go with a 700 R4. A T200 may work as well – you may want to check overall dimensions when compared to a Turbo 400 or 350 to see if it fits in the Vette. The other option for OD is a T350 or T400 with a gear vendor’s OD (not sure if it fits in a vette though). In any case get a good shop to do a perfomance build on it.

For a manual – Richmond 5 speed. Without OD Super T10.

Good luck – sounds like a cool project.

Q: i have a 1969 chevy impala convertible with an original L48 350ci/300hp corvette engine, how rare is this?
I know how much this car is worth without this engine but I want to know if this was an engine option that did not occur much in the impala in ‘69.

A: Perhaps one of the most lovable collectors items today. We have a few in our country with the original paint, interior, engines and gear boxes and very carefully maintained. I cannot confirm the engine on one of the cars, since it has been a long time when we talked to the owner about him selling the car, but I recollect it was a V-8. The white wall tyres and covers were original as well. In 1992 he wanted US$ 20,000/- and I am sure someone must have paid him that amount.

Q: Combination Procharger and Supercharger?
I was wondering if stacking a root supercharger (such as a Weiand but not specifically) with a centrifugal supercharger (Procharger specifically) would have any advantage in increasing horse power. My thinking here is it could perform much like a sequential turbo charged system. With the exception that both would be running at the same time no matter the engine speed.

Current engine is a naturally aspired 1969 Chevy corvette V8 7.0L 427 CID w/ a dual 450 carb system. Stock pistons and cam.

A: it would cause to much parasitic power loss to be practical, you would also probably have to much static compression for the engine to handle the added boost

Q: 1969 Chevy 307 out of a boat?
I was wondering how much horsepower a 307 out of a boat would have with longtube headers, Corvette intake 4 barrel car with a spacer and different heads?

A: well the original 307 started at 200hp @ 4600r.p.m. and 300lbs.ft @ 2400r.p.m. i don’t know how much the other parts would effect it but thats the base all stock

Q: What year did Chevy put a 6 numbered odometer in there cars.?
I am thinking about buying an older Chevy Corvette.

In between 1969 and 1982.

But I am concerned that all the odometers that I have seen all have 5 digits on it and because the cars are so old there is practically no way of knowing the actual mileage.

My question is what year did Chevy start putting 6 numbered odometers in their Corvettes and why did they ever put 5 numbered ones in there in the first place.

Was it because they never intended for the cars to last over 100,000 miles?

What is the maintanence like for buying an older car like that?

If it needs parts are they expensive and hard to find?

Atleast answer the odometer question if anything else and if possible please provide a refference because I have looked in every search engine I can think of and can’t find the answer.
Good answers so far but I would like to point out that services like carfax only go back to like 1990 and cars before that dont have enough numbers on there VIN number.

So that wont help.

I will simplify the question.

What was the first year that the Chevy Corvette got a 6 numbered odomoter as standered.
Also about the law, that dosent apply to cars over 15 years old.

It is by Federal law to be said “Miles Exempt”

Meaning Miles Unknown.

A cleaned up 220,000 mile car might look like a 120,000 mile car and you can’t tell because the odomoter only says 20,000 because it only has 5 numbers and not 6.

A: I would also have to say late 80’s early 90’s, i have a 77 and 87 chevy pickup, they both have 5 digit.

Q: I DARE YOU TO ANSWER THIS CHEVY QUESTIOn?
I am thinking about buying an older Chevy Corvette.

In between 1969 and 1982.

But I am concerned that all the odometers that I have seen all have 5 digits on it and because the cars are so old there is practically no way of knowing the actual mileage.

The law about disclosing miles does not apply to cars over 15 years old so they would be sold as “Mileage Exempt”

Or rather Miles unknown.
I have asked this question once before and did not get the answer needed so I dare you to answer this question.
A cleaned up 220,000 mile car might look like a 120,000 mile car and you can’t tell because the odomoter only says 20,000 because it only has 5 numbers and not 6.

A: Gm used the 5 number odometers until 85/ 86. After that they started converting the cars to six numbers odometers, yet some remained 5 til the mid-90s.

Yes, buying parts for a Corvette is going to be expensive just due to the fact its a sports car. If its a mechanical part, do your resource and get the same part for say a Impala, same part, but don’t have the Vette hype to it.

There are Corvette clubs you can join that the members knows the VINs for every Vette built and what options came on it and can help you document the car. Corvettes are the all American sports car so theres a strong following with them, any info you need for one can easily be found online or though a national club.

Q: What are the advantages of a Dual Carburetor System?
I plan on purchasing a 1969 Chevy Corvette V8 7.0L 427 CID. I was wondering if a dual carburetor has any advantage. Looking around the only advantage I could find is aesthetics. I heard about all of the tuning difficulties and the disadvantages but is there any advantage, further more is there any advantage dual carbing with a supercharger specifically a procharger???
The engine will not be stock for long the intention here is build a street/strip car.
Fuel economy is second to performance here, as I will not be using the vehicle for everyday driving.

A: For a large capacity engine like that, one large carburettor (950cfm or 1150cfm) tends to be less efficient at accurately metering the fuel/air ratio at small throttle openings, because the airspeed through the carb isn’t high enough to ensure extra-fine atomisation of the large quantity fuel being pulled through the bigger jets.

You can get better fuel economy and better running at low revs and small throttle openings by running two smaller carbs (2×475cfm or 2×600cfm) which gives you the same wide open throttle airflow, but with better running and fuel economy everywhere else.

Your best bet for tuneability, smoothest running, easiest starting, lower fuel consumption, maximum possible horsepower and most compact installation is to go with an aftermarket E.F.I. setup.

Q: 1969 Yenko Camaro vs 1969 boss 429 mustang who would win in a drag?
you know (the Yenko Built by Don Yenko) with the 450hp 427 Corvette Inspired Engine while the boss has its 429 which had i believe 375hp obvious the Yenko Camaro Would kill the 69′boss due to the Yenko Camaro Having more Horsepower im more of a Chevy guy anyways i have Camaros the only ford i would ever drive is probably 1967 Shelby GT500 or a New 2007 Shelby GT500 than that the Camaro/Corvette will kill any ford even the Shelby GT500’s 67′ or 2007since the Z28 and or SS Camaro’s are nearly identical to the Corvette in fact the only thing is that GM/Chevy detunes the Camaro so that it is not 100% Corvette if it wasnt for that The Camaro Would be exactly a Corvette base and or Z06 but anyways who would win between a 1969 SYC Yenko Camaro 427 450hp vs a 1969 boss 429 mustang 375hp in a straight drag race?

A: Yenko for sure!!!!!

Q: So i am really into cars and in the future i want to drag race so some thoughts on what car i should use?
i am 17 currently and i have a 1966 el camino and its pretty sweet but i want to race a 1968 corvette, a 1978 corvette, a 1969 chevelle, or a 72 nova as you can see i am a chevy kinda guy so any ideas???

A: Well, if you have money for ‘vettes, good for you.
That being said, you can drag race anything. You are only going to race agains other cars with similar qualifying times. They would not put a VW jetta against a Viper.
So, it doesn’t matter what you race. I would use the car that is least expensive to repair. Dragging with a ‘Vette kinda ruins the ‘Vette. Drag racers are all gutted inside and stuff. Use a beater car with a hot motor.

Q: Chevrolet brand small block intake manifold question.?
The 1965 Corvette 365 hp 327 engine had a completely different standard Chevy aluminum intake than the 1969 Z28 302 Comaro. Explain why. I realize the carburetors were different as the 327 had a 580 cfm. Holley The 302 had the 780 cfm. Correct me if I’m wrong I think the camshafts had the same specs.

A: This is an easy one. The Corvette didn’t have the space between the hood and the carburetor, that the 302 Z-28 did, so they went with a more high rise type intake to make more torque. The height of the carburetor, the space between the hood, and the style of the air cleaner, all play a major role in how much rise can be on the intake.
The lifts were very similar on these two cam shafts, but where the difference is, is in the duration. They were both solid lifter cams, but by increasing the duration of the lift, they were able to get much more air into the engine, thus more fuel, thus a larger cfm carburetor.
Glad to help you, Good luck!!!

Q: PLEASE HELP! I need to know the cost of the following cars when they were brand new?
1900 Haynes
1902 Waltham Orient Roundabout Car
1903 Toledo 18 hp Touring Car
1958 Plymouth Fury
1957 Plymouth Fury
1900 Haynes-Apperson Six Carriage & Roundabout Car
1957 chevy
1958 imapala, and corvette
1963 limited edition thunderbird landau
1970 dodge challenger
1970 Caprice
1970 chevelle SS 396
1969 Camaro SS
1966/1967 cadillac deville

If anyone knows what any of these cars went for in US the year they were made, please let me know. i really appreciate it.

A: I have no idea what the 1900s cars cost but I was around in the 1950s. A 1958 or 1957 Plymouth Fury ran about $2,000 with normal equipment. A 57 Chevrolet about the same. In fact the dealers were advertising the stripped down model for $1,795. My Dad had a 58 Chevrolet and paid maybe $2,200. The Corvette was a lot more expensive, maybe $4,500. By the early 1970’s prices had climbed to about $3,500 for the cars you have listed. The 1966-67 Cadillac was about the most expensive car around and maybe cost $5,000 at the most. The Thunderbird was the same.

Q: what kind of exaust should i choses please help!!?
ok I wanna know every thing there is to know about my exhaust. I have a 1988 iroc z Chevy camaro its a 305 and has single exhaust it has a cross flow muffler. I want to change it to dual exhaust. I have looked at everything what I have consider the most so far is flow master super 40 exhaust, I have also looked in to Boral and glass pack and a lil magna flows I have seen some x pipe set ups but I don’t understand how they work. I have ben listing to clips after clips on you tube and flow master website for about 4 months now and cant decide what to do I want answers no answer can be to long I wanna know everything you know and all your opions. I also wanna know what the cost is I should be looking at, and the price for everything…. seeing how I have single exhaust right now that means I should get a dual exhaust manifold dose it matter what kind I get…. OH YEA!!! I haven’t mentioned but I want my car to sound like a 1973 corvette stingray or a 1969 camaro I want that deep muscle car sound . yea u know that I can stop at a street light and pop it n neutral and barley hit the gas and the guy beside me is like man he has a nice car. I don’t want that bad low grade sounding back fire when I let off the rev though.. so please tell me what I should get and as of right now price doesn’t matter I just wanna know what its grade A stuff and what is complete trash ill post additional stuff if u need me to…

A: your best bet is to go to a shop that bends their own pipe and get a dual exhaust system made for your car as they will custom bend it and fit everything, you can have them put in a X pipe or an H pipe whichever one you choose, the X is better than the H pipe as far as better flow goes, you need to figure on what size exhaust pipes you want to put on it such as 21/4″ or 2.5″ and then order your X or H pipe and your mufflers from summit racing or Jeggs, I would suggest flowmaster super 44 mufflers if you want that musclecar sound and get offset in the front of the mufflers and center outlets on the back of the mufflers, this will make a nice system that will rock.

Q: Volkswagen Beetle?
Anyone who owns or has owned a Volkswagen Beetle, what is your experience with reliability and what’s the average MPG?

I always wanted a bug but couldn’t afford one when I was looking for my first car. Everyone told me what great cars they are and how long they last, I finally bought a 2001 Beetle which I love driving. I stumbled across some old reviews and they don’t look to great. What do you think?

A: I have a ‘98 2.0L New Beetle that I love – named her Ladybug.
She’s very reliable, a great giggle to drive, and getting 34MPG these days. 30MPG if I drive HARD. You should check out my favorite free New Beetle community site. It’s http://newbeetle.org
I’ve learned so much from the nice people there over the years! There’s owners from all over the world, learning, showing off their NBs, or just hanging out. Hope to see you there

Q: How much does a Used Volkswagen beetle cost?
I want to buy a Volkswagen beetle for my first car. Of course it has to be used! What I really want is a light blue convertible beetle, but that probably won’t happen! So, I was wondering how much a 2004,2005, or 2006 beetle might cost?

A: The price will be different depending on where you live. Check the newspaper ads in your area for the best idea of what a used VW will cost. You will usually get a lower price from a private seller but you can’t pay it off over time that way (and no warranty of course).

Also, you can look for one on Craigslist in your city. Ebay lets you set your search limits to within 50 miles of your town, so you could look there for one, too.

Good luck!! : )

Q: How do I install the Volkswagen Beetle wiring cover?
I bought a wiring cover for my 1970 Volkswagen Beetle. The cover is a piece of plastic that installs across the rear of the trunk to protect the wires and the interior of the dash. There are two sets of metal tangs on top, but how do I use them to secure it if that is what they’re used for and 2, how do I secure it to the floor of the trunk?

A: I had a 1969 Beetle. I had to fabricate a little piece of flexible metal strapping to hold mine in place. It was firm enough to hold teh plastic up, yet allow it to be removed when I needed access to the electrical.
I also replaced the chrome VW hood emblem, so I took the old one and drilled some holes in my wire cover so that I could mount the old emblem. It looked cool!
Good Luck and Happy Buggin’!

Q: What cables attach to the battery for a Volkswagen Beetle?
There are three different cables that attach to the Volkswagen Beetle (1970) battery, with two to the positive terminal and one to the negative. Where do these cables attach from there? And what is the chassis to transmission strap?

A: The big red cable goes to the starter. The other goes to the regulator. The black cable goes to the floor pan. There is another cable (woven metal strap) under the car that connects the transmisson housing to the floor pan.

Q: How many miles per gallon does a 2005 turbo volkswagen beetle get?
I am looking into purchasing a used 2005 volkswagen turbo beetle, and although the dealership claims that it gets 36 mpg, I have trouble believing it. Does anybody know what its actual gas milage is?

A: I have owned two New Beetles, both were/are non-turbos, and the best gas mileage I got was 32. I drive like a grandma, seriously. I would expect to get around 25. Unless of course you are talking about a diesel, in which case I would expect 35 to 45, depending.

Q: What is the Wagner Dot used for in a Volkswagen Beetle?
A two prong cylindrical piece is connected to some wires in y 1970 Volkswagen Beetle. The writing on it appears to say “wagner dot.”
Where do these wires connect, where does the mechanism go, and what does it do?

A: Wagner is the manufacturer, DOT means it is Department of Transportation approved. It’s either a head light relay, possibly a flasher for turn and 4 ways (I doubt it they usually have more prongs and are square), or they key in ignition/seatbelt buzzer. If high and low beam headlights work and turnsignals work, it’s the buzzer. The buzzer is annoying when it works.

Q: How much would a paint job cost on a volkswagen beetle?
I really would like to buy a volkswagen beetle.
I saw a white one for a good price.
How much would it cost to paint it light pink the whole car.?

A: To have a quality shop do it around $1500 Without a lot of body work.

Q: How do I remove the dash switches on an old air cooled Volkswagen Beetle?
How do I remove the dash switches on an old air cooled Volkswagen Beetle?
I need to rewire the switches on my 1970 Volkswagen Beetle, and am trying to remove the switches from the dash. Is there anyway to remove the knobs without damaging them, and if so, how do I remove the switch one the knob is off?

A: Got to get at it from the back side of the dash board.

Q: How much would it cost to have an convertible top installed on a Volkswagen beetle?
I just got my volkswagen beetle. It;’s a 2000.And I want to have a covertible top installed. How much would it run me approximately?

A: Much more money than the car is worth….

You’re talking about converting it, right?

Q: Is it difficult to get repairs done on a new Volkswagen beetle?
I want to get a new Volkswagen beetle (preferably a 2000-2003 model). But my uncle says that is is very hard to get work/repairs done on them. I don’t know if this is true, but it kinda seems unlikely. But I need some legit proof that this is either true or not true. Thanks!

A: if the mechanics you go to only know how to fix a ford or chev yeah then it is hard to get it fixed by them. But, I don’t go to a domestic mechanic to fix an imported car. my Ferrari you no touch. I am pretty sure there is more than just hammer mechanics in your town. Seeing VW has been in NA since the mid 50’s there are a quite a few garages that know how to fix them. Still with the newer ones, I would go to VW dealer just because they have the parts at hand. The other places order the parts from the dealer and then add “their overhead” for using the phone to get the part onto the price.

Q: Can I jumpstart a Volkswagen Beetle with jumper cables?
Can I use jumper cables to start a 1970 12 volt Volkswagen Beetle? Will this destroy the starter, or should I use a battery charger?

A: Lift the sitting cushion off the back seat attach cables and jump start, had 6 BEATLES..

Will NOT destroy anything.

Q: My 1999 Volkswagen Beetle keeps getting hot and it has antifreeze in it. What could make it get hot?
My 1999 Volkswagen Beetle keeps getting hot and when I check it in the morning, it has antifreeze in it. What could be making it get hot?

A: You could have several causes of running hot: you need to check if thermostat is working (not stuck closed); are the radiator fans operational (when the vehicle engine temp is hot, you ought be able to hear the radiator fans operate); poor circulation thru the radiator; or a fairly common issue is the water pump impeller not circulating the water. (As I remember, I think it was 2000 or 2001 when VW changed the impeller design )

My suggestion is that you take the vehicle to a VW specialist to have the cooling system operation put under a diagnosis to determine the cause of the overheating. Avoid driving the vehicle as much as possible, driving the vehicle hot can lead to expensive repairs such as a blown head gasket.

Hope this helps, a car nut.

Q: Where does the in line fuel filter go on a Volkswagen Beetle?
I replaced the in-line fuel filter on my Volkswagen Beetle (1970,) but I think I have it going in the wrong direction. It is spliced into a tube going between a little thing next to the flywheel with a saucer shaped thing on top to the part directly below the air filter (on top.) Is there another fuel filter? Where should the little arrow on the in line one be pointing? Is it possible to clean the other fuel filter?

A: Arrow twards the carb, youll be fine, use new clamps

Q: Where can I have my Volkswagen Beetle serviced at?
My engine light is on & I need to have it looked at. We have no Volkswagen dealership in the area & I want a reliable mechanic to service it. Anyone out there with a Bug take there anywhere but the dealership? I’ve had oil changes at Sears & they have been exceelent but I wasn’t sure if they were qualified to work on a Beetle!

A: I normally don’t recommend “specialists” but beetles are funky lil cars that require funky lil techs. We have a place called the bug doctor so do some reseach and find a reputable bug guy in your area.PLEASE don’t take it to sears.

Example:To replace the radiator in your car,you need to remove both front fenders and the bumper as a unit, fun stuff that most techs won’t wanna deal with

Q: How much for and old Volkswagen Beetle?
How much would I be looking to pay for a used, working, old version Volkswagen Beetle in Australia?
I already know that they do not work well, I would like a estimate on how much i might pay.

A: Lots of them here.Click the classified button then look on the left side of the screen and narrow it down a bit. Once you have done that, then click the search button and you can narrow it down further: price, state, and so on….Have fun..

A great and must read article: subaru wrx for sale

Q: Subaru WRX?
my partner is buying me a Subaru WRX and I am trying to decide between the standard WRX or the WRX sti, we are in Australia…anyway advantages/disadvantages for both, we are paying cash…….

Mitch

A: You won’t regret buying the WRX STI.
When you open up the throttle on the freeway and fly past anything in front of you lol. You will even give those Holden Monaro’s a run for their money.
But if it’s too expensive you will be happy with the WRX, that’s the middleman. Below Impreza WRX is just cars for the wife’s

Q: Who knows if the 2009 Subaru WRX has faulty engine builds and is prone to engine failure?
I’ve been looking at getting a 2009 Subaru WRX wagon due to its performance and winter capabilities. However, thus far over 50 people on the NASIOC site have reported engine failures; Subaru has consequently been replacing the entire turbo engine.

Recent posts suggest the faulty engines are from earlier build dates of 8/08 to 9/08. Can anyone confirm this?

Subaru has denied knowing anything of this sort.

A: There were some failures but not that many. You can’t go by what is said on NASIOC. Too many kids on there spreading shit. And yes it was in the tune. Subaru recently has been doing some funny things with the tuning. The 08 STI has the same problem too as well as the 07 STI. Nothing wrong with the build it self. Some people were just beating on the engine too much and it was causing problems but there have been service bulletins about it and as far as I know, it’s not an issue anymore. Just ask if the car you are looking at either has a build date after the specified time or has had a reflash done to fix any problems. It should say in the thread on NASIOC what months were bad. Thing you need to know is, the new WRX’s have been selling pretty well but you never hear people posting about having no problems. Only people who have had a problem post and it spreads and looks like an epidemic. And it’s not that the dealer you spoke to is in denial. It’s very possible that they have never had one brought in for the problem. Like I said, the percent of failures compared to the units sold is very small.

Q: What car should I get 350z or subaru wrx sti?
I am 16 years old and my dad bought a 2004 350z. I really had no influence on this buy. I was looking at 2005 subaru wrx sti. I dont know which to get because I like the 350z but it only has 2 seats while the wrx has 5. Please tell me which one you would choose, and the + and – of each car.

A: depends what youre looking for…

the STI is faster, has AWD for better handling… smaller engine but with a turbo which has a few advantages… like if youre not making boost (turbo doesnt kick in till like 2500 rpms) youll be using less gas (but good luck trying NOT to go fast in that car)… like you said seats 5, 4 doors etc etc

the 350 is a sexy looking car… lower, lighter, smaller… powerful v6, nice interior and sound system (that bose is amazing)…

like i said it all depends on what youre looking for.. if you want the looks and the fun of RWD go for the 350

if you want the rally type experience: fast, fun, challenging… go with the STI.. and as far as perfomance mods go, it’ll be easier to make the STI faster because its already turbo’d… you want more power out the 350, the largest gains in HP will come from forced induction

now ive got to do the responsible thing and give you a little pep talk… first off youre only 16 and im 90% sure you wont be paying for this car all by yourself… if i were you id get a beater car that you can learn to drive on (and not get too upset when you damage it)… both the cars youre looking at are beasts and take experience to drive, so that should probably be your first priority

Q: Where is the best insurance company to insure a subaru wrx turbo?
Im 40 years old and am going to be buying a subaru wrx turbo ,can anyone suggest a good insurance company and how much roughly would it be to insure it fully comp .THANKS .

A: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/compare-cheap-car-insurance

They show you a method to search just about every insurer.

I’ve just gone with Swiftcover. Cheap *and* online.

Q: Is it easy to take a turbo off a subaru wrx?
im asking this because i might get a 97′ subaru wrx wagon.Due to victorian laws i cant drive it with a turbo, so is it easy to take it off? and if i do, do i have to take the intercooler off as well?

Also, would this be expensive or a relatively cheap job?

A: You must be in the UK. I suspect it might be a difficult task due to the fact that you’d have to set up the engine to run without the turbo. I would find a very skilled mechanic or take it to a Subaru dealer.

Q: how much would i cost to rebuild a 2007 subaru wrx sti engine?
I’m planning on owning a 2007 subaru wrx or an sti. How much is maintenance with moderate driving not racing or pushing the car to hard, i don’t drive to crazy. My question and my real answer i’m looking for is how much if it happened would a engine rebuild price be and also transmission rebuild.

A: For that car if you had to rebuild the engine and transmission together at once the car would be effectively totaled. Rebuilds on turbocharged boxer engines are outrageously expensive, and when you add in a 4 wheel drive transmission you’d be looking at a total of around $12,000 US.

Q: In what years do Subaru wrx sedans come with an automatic transmission?
I have $10000 to get a car and am thinking about getting a used Subaru wrx because ive heard they’re fast and pretty comfortable.Would buying a manual Subaru make that much of a difference?

A: They have made automatic WRX’s through the 07 model years. From 08 they were called the Impreza GT for some reason. The manual transmission will have an advantage when accelerating from a standstill but from there the longer gears and no loss of boost between shifts can give the auto an advantage. Really it just depends on what you want. An automatic WRX is still way more fun to drive than any other automatic import. I had an auto 02 and after cahnging the down pipe and re flashing it, it really woke up. But my current 5 speed gives much better control of the power band when driving aggressively. I say go out and drive one. If you like it, get it. The auto also has a better AWD system for snowy conditions if you have winters where you live.

Q: What oil should I use in a 1997 Subaru WRX engine?
I have a 1997 Subaru WRX, not sure if it is a STi, and don’t know what oil to use! I don’t mind on what brand it is, just want to know what grade is best!
It has a ZeroSport computer from Japan in it, and runs 18 pound boost. Does that make any difference?

A: Mobil 1 is the best! It is expensive but well worth it. You get better gas mileage and more performance out of your car. A win win is what I say.

use man. req. like 5/20 or 5w/30 they sell for all makes

Q: What does it take to convert a Subaru Wrx to natural gas?
I have an 03 Subaru WRX and I need to know what parts I need, how much they cost, and if i can figure out how to do it myself to convert my vehicle to natural gas.

A: go to your natural gas outlet and tell them for what car

Q: What is the difference between the 2009 Subaru WRX Base model and the Premium model?
What is the difference between the 2009 Subaru WRX Base model and the Premium model? I would like a complete list of all the differences…

A: Base model: $24,995 MSRP
Premium model: $27,495 MSRP. The WRX Premium adds a power moonroof, 10-speaker, 6-disc audio system with auxiliary input and heated front seats, side mirrors and windshield wiper de-icer. Check with a dealer for more details.

Michael B: There are three “2009″ WRX models: Base, Premium, and STI. The question did not ask about the STI. You are describing the 04-07 models.

Q: What is the offset for the wheels on a 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX Wagon?
I own a 2002 Subaru WRX Wagon and I think it’s time for a new set of wheels. I need to know what the offset is so I can buy me a new set. Also, would rims with an offset of 42 mm fit (securely) on my car? Thanks.

A: I believe the offset is 55mm. Check out tire rack to shop for wheels. They will list the offset to give you an idea of what will fit properly. 42mm may be pushing it, I see many at 48 or 50mm.

Q: Should I buy a 05 subaru wrx with 81k miles ? Is too much miles a red flag ?
I want to buy this 05 Subaru WRX, but it has 81000 miles on it, thats an average of 40k miles per year should I be concerned? what type of questions should I ask the sales man? Blue book value on the car is $17400 and the dealer asking price is $14999. Is that a good price? Your Advice would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks !
The car is at a deler so I dont know who previously owned it.

A: You can ask the salesman who the previous owner was, it will take him 2 minutes to check the deal jacket in the office. resistance here would be a red flag for me. It may have been on the road closer to 3 1/2 years.

sporty turbo car……would want to determined what kind of life it had…..are stock tires replaced with cheap dealer installed ones?

Look at paint closely…give it a good test drive, he may want to take it around the block once, but i’d want to hear that motor as it builds to near red line, feel it at 70 75 on the hiway any vibrations…listen

does shifter go into gear fast and smooth? Does the clutch grab the friction plate like a pit bull, or can you feel it let go a little.

engage the brakes at different speeds, does the pedal go down really far., its there any wheel shake.

Ok ….this is a deal where a $50 mechanic inspection is a good idea. The mileage is high but not a deal breaker, Subies are tuff little buggers.

I would ABSOLUTLY bargain this guy to the wall if i wanted that car……ready for Bear…..We don’t know what $ he has in it.

Q: Where can I find a Subaru WRX Engine for cheap?
I have a 2002 Subaru WRX and I need to replace the Engine. Does anyone know where I can find one (used is okay) in good condition with not too many miles on it in the Chicagoland area or online?
okay yeah I know ebay and craigslist, i’m talkin about other places that aren’t so obvious.
Oh! And some guy I work with was telling me about some website that I guess imports used engines from japan because they discard them or something like that after a certain amount of miles due to some law…does anyone know what he’s talking about lol

A: Check craigslist or forums below. There is one near me for $1500 with 40k miles. 4 hours away from you though.

Q: How much for a 2007 subaru wrx sti engine and where to get it?
How much for a 2007 subaru wrx sti engine and where can i get it brand new or used? And how much should labor be for swapping the new one in

A: I can’t give you an exact dollar figure but I would imagine it is quite expensive. This engine gets worse gas mileage then most V8’s, I don’t know if that is of any concern to you. To answer your question you may want to contact Subaru of America.

Hey “tonuprocker”, whatever that means? Stop being so foolish to believe everything that Subaru publishes, using unrealistic testing parameters! Try spending some time reading “unbiased” publications that publish real world WRX mileage at no more then 17-19 MPG on average using “premium” fuel no less.

Q: What should i expect to get by installing a HKS Down Pipe to my 2004 Subaru WRX?
I just bought a HKS Downpipe for my 2004 Subaru WRX. What can i expect to gain out of the installment?
For Example:
Will i get more horsepower? If i do get more horsepower, how much horsepower should i be expecting to get out of it?
Will it sound louder?

A: about 15-20 hp with out a ecu tune. but you need to watch out for boost spikes.

A great and must read article: honda civic

Q: honda civics?
does anyone kno where to find cheep honda civics? like 3000 or less? and i already kno craigslist

A: try ebay

or a local dealer

Q: Honda Civics?
Do any 08 Honda Civics come with a larger than 4 cylinder engine? And if anyone has driven one with a 4 cylinder are they slow starters?

A: Nope, all civics are 4 cylinders.

The LX and DX models are slowest of all, especially with an automatic transmission.

The EX/Si are the faster ones of the series, with VTEC motors and a little more torque than the base models

But all still 4 cylinders.

Q: Is it true that Honda Civics are easy to break into?
I am getting a car soon and my family and I found a good deal on a Honda Civic. I do not mind Honda Civics and they drive well, but my boyfriend told me that Honda Civics are a bad choice because anybody can break into them and steal them. Is this true? I live in a pretty safe neighborhood, but my college is located in an area that isn’t dangerous, but not that safe either. What are the risks of having a Honda Civic? How likely is it that somebody can break into a Honda Civic and steal it?

A: i have had a civic for 2 years, it was done up with rims & a paint job, sunroof, exhaust ect..
never has anybody tried to break into my car! i leave it in side streets when i go shopping in dark, shopping centre parking, the city ecttt

Q: what other year honda civics front passanger windows can u use?
we need a front passanger window for a 95 honda civic 2 door but we cant find the car at the junk yard. what other honda civics windows can we use?

A: pretty sure just 92-95 2 door.

Q: How do people win races with Honda Civics?
Nothing against Honda. I know they’re great cars… but the honda civics only get about 100 horsepower (I know the new ones get more, but I usually see people with the older ones)

I know you can soup em up and stuff. But I even know people that win races with them without hardly doing any mods. And most new normal commuter cars out there will get a few hundred horsepower.

Is there something else other than horsepower I should be taking into account?

A: If its like auto cross race’s that they are winning, it’s because they handle well around corners and they don’t loose traction as easily due to not having any torque.

For drag races, its mostly due to the lightness of the car. In some case’s, a simple head swap can give you an extra 17-35hp, depending how invloved you get with it (adjustable cams and chipped ecu). Throw a stage 2 or 3 cam on top of that and you get another 20hp or so.

So you can go from 102hp stock on a 92-95 civic with a d15b7 to around 150+ with not a lot of work and in a lot of case’s less than $1,000.

Even with a blown head gasket and extra crap in my Civic, I can still get a 9 second 0-60. Car has 205,000 miles too. It’s actually quite amazing how well they hold up.

-Chris

Q: Honda civics?
when people say you lost low end power, does that mean, is it in all the gears or what, i realy dont know bout cars. lol

A: Power on the low end is power from a standing or slow start, like when you are just moving off or going slow

Q: What are some common/occasional mechanical problems with Honda Civics?
For 2002-2005 versions, what are some of the re-occuring mechanical issues for Honda Civics? Where are they in terms of reliability when compared to other economy cars like the Cobalt and Focus.

A: nothing i know of with mind all i did was the norm maintence and never had any problems

Q: How long do Honda civics last?
I am buying a car soon and i found a car i liked and its a Honda Civic EX 1997 with 180,000 Miles. I heard that cars die at certain amount of mileage so anyone know what mileage do Honda Civics die at? anyone know?

A: Hondas you can drive for everr. I have a honda accord with about 190,000 miles and it still runs great.
Just make sure you change the oil on time and you will be fine. You can keep that car for over 250.000 miles. Im sure

Q: A question about the quality of newer Honda Civics?
Are the latest generation of Honda Civics (2006 and later in this case) as durable and dependable as Civics from years past granted, of course, regular maintenance and a lot of tlc is involved?

A: I never had one so I cant say. But if your looking into tuning, the older versions are easier

Q: Are honda civics bad cars for a young driver?
I like honda civics (looking at early 1990’s models) but i am told that they are not good because
1. Parts are expensive
2. Expensive to service
3. Very commonly stolen car

Are these reasons true?
i mean a young driver who doesn’t have much money
ok
My point is are they expensive to maintain compared to other cars with similar fuel efficencies

A: parts aren’t that expensive, considering the large aftermarket out there for civic. ebay is great,. servicing will depend on what’s wrong with it, regular maintenance can be done by you, the driver. and depending on where you live, you might want to check the statistics for cars stolen in your area.

Q: How much do Honda Civics cost in Indiana?
Planning to come home soon (my home is in Elkhart, Indiana)…and Looking for a car, I was wondering how much Honda Civics cost in Indiana, Im talking about the 1992-1995 ones, The EG Civics, i prefer Hatchbacks…Was just wondering how much would they cost there for the car in a good condition?

Reasons why I would like a Civic is of fuel efficiency they have, and plus they are okay…

Hatchbacks

A: look around at your local conveniance stores for an Indiana Auto Car and Truck magazine. great place to start. also do a yahoo auto search and give your location, itll then list all cars in your local area that are for sale.

Q: What’s the difference between the eg hg or ej Honda civics ex?
ibhav a Honda 1994 Honda ciivc and when I’m shopping online foe parts it says it will fit the eg’s even though I selected the right model and year. will they fit?my first vin.# are 2hgej. What do these mean?

A: EG/ HG/ EJ are chasis codes…
EG is 1992-1995 hatchbacks
EJ is 1996-2000 sedans

never heard of HG tho.

many parts are interchangable on honda cars (honda/ acura). they share many of the same motors and many parts are motor specific. so it is not uncommon to find an aftermarket part that will work on a few different models.

Q: What is the best online forum for Honda Civics?
I have a honda civic and want to join a decent forum. What is the best one?

A: Honda-Tech.com – Best
nwp4life.com – Second Best
wiredonhonda.com – Thrid best
SoCalHonda.com – Fourth
Idk any other ones. I think Honda-Tech is the best though.

Q: how much mileage on average can honda civics last?
whats the highest mileage you have heard of for a honda civic?

A: 90 civic w/ 278,000 thats when it begain to smoke.Replaced rings, bearings valve job and she getting close to 350,000 Believe it or not

Q: what are the differences between the 2006-2008 models of honda civics to the 2009 model?
I want a 2009 Honda Civic Coupe (baby blue), but i don’t know how much they go for nowadays to start. My main question though is what does the 2009 model have that the 2006, 2007, and 2008, don’t have? Thanks!

A: Here’s a list of the (few) differences. http://www.motortrend.com/photo_gallery/112_0808_2009_honda_civic_comparison_gallery/index.html

A great and must read article: 1964 ford falcon

Q: find engine sizes for a 1964 ford falcon?
I am looking to put a engine in my son’s 1964 falcon, he has a 170 but I am looking to put a 200 or possibly a 262 if I do not have to do any reconstruction of the engine compartment, such as rearranging motor mounts etc…
any suggestions? I will also be having a new transmission dropped in at the same time.

A: In 1964 factory installation was a L6, 144.3 – 170.0 – 200.0 – and V8, 260.0, 116 hp.

Q: Where can I find headers for a 1964 Ford Falcon?
I have a 64 Falcon with a 260ci V8 and want to find a pair of good headers. Already checked flowmaster and hedman and they only make parts for the 298 motor.

A: well babe

go out to ur nearist skoda out let walk in start roarin am a big shot serve me now i own a big chuga chuga moble n its broketed please help
and if this fails then

Q: 1964 Ford Falcon: How to identify the difference between the 260 and 289 manifold.?
How can I determine whether I have a 260 or 289 manifold?

A: there should be a casting number on it starting with C4 for 64 or C5 for 65, also look at the road draft tube in the rear, early ones had it. but there were some very early 289’s that will look the same, so you can’t really tell…

oh, I almost forgot the easiest, 4 barrels are all 289, any 260 will be a 2 barrel.. and a 2 barrel 289 will be a C5 at least for Mustangs..not 100% for sure about Falcons..

Q: looking to purchase a 1964 ford falcon 6 cylinder engine?
1964 falcon convert able located in ca. the present engine has a cracked block and cannot be rebuilt. i have searched everywhere…engine must run, will consider shipping from anywhere in u.s.

A: If I were you… I’d make sure the block is truly unusable. Any cylinder wall that’s cracked can usually be bored out and sleeved. That’s a normal fix. However, cracked water jackets not associated with the cylinder wall are another story… etc-etc-etc. If you don’t know what’s what, get the opinion of a long standing automotive machine shop in your area. They will tell you whether or not a block can be sleeved or if it’s really shot. There are also a few motor welding companies across the country that are very successful with certain repairs too… but repairs of this nature (oven brazing and cast iron welding) are usually expensive thus are reserved for expensive and rare blocks. If your car is a numbers matching car… you might choose to look into doing what it takes to save the block though. I would. If worse comes to worst, turn the block into a coffee table. After you fully degrease and paint it. Why? Because you never know what the future holds for repairs… and some day, your block might be able to be saved. They’re doing amazing things with lasers these days… including in the realm of welding.

OK, you didn’t say what engine you have… but if it’s a stock engine it should be a 144 or 170 unless someone transplanted in a 200, 250, 240 or 300. I doubt you have a 250, 240 or 300 though… but I couldn’t rule it out either so I decided to bring them up. For a stock engine, either the 144 or 170 isn’t that good of an engine. By design they’re weaker than later inlines… but they can be hopped up a little bit to get a bit more HP out of them. Finding one won’t be easy… but more on that later.

In case you have a 200, it’ll be better than the 144 or 170 due to it being a better design than the others. You can also hop it up more… in fact, overall, more speed parts are available for the 200 than the other engines. Can a 200 really be hopped up? Sure. You can DOUBLE the HP if you want to spend the money. It has 7 main bearings (stout block, smooth operation) and quite a few speed parts available for it: header sets, bolt on intakes (after you machine the head to allow them to be bolted on), etc-etc-etc. You can actually do a lot with them if you want to.

As for the others I listed, the best of the bunch is the 300. The 250 is an enlarged 200 for the most part… and that’s OK… but the 300 is the pinnacle. It is Ford’s longest running engine. Ford turned it into an EFI engine back in 1987 and there are lots of parts available for it. In fact, you can get 400 HP or more out of it if you want to… reliable HP too. The 240 came before the 300… and the block is the same. The crank for the 300 is different (longer stroke) and the 240 head gives higher compression but the engines for the most part use the same parts and are interchangeable.

Let’s look at your car. If you want to remain stock, by all means… seek out a 144 or 170. Get a serviceable block rebuilt to specs, install it and enjoy your car. What would I do? Seriously look at installing a modern 302. Why? For the power gain & economy, it’ll be worth it. Far more HP and far better mileage. It will weigh more than a stock 6 but you can easily overcome that by beefing up the suspension of the car. The good news? Plenty of parts are available to swap in this engine. The downside? You’ll probably have to swap the trans out too… but again, to me it would be worth it. Your car, properly modified, will be so much more enjoyable to drive… good grief. I can almost feel a 302 backed by a T5 at my fingertips. Anyway, that’s just an idea.

Here’s the “more” I promised. What to do about getting a stock engine? You live in California. Lucky you. Tons of parts suppliers in CA. If I were you, I’d contact all the suppliers I could find near you, in state or on the west coast. Also check these:

http://www.falconparts.com (North Highlands, CA)
http://www.dearbornclassics.com (Bend, OR)
http://www.nwfalcon.com (Portland, OR)
http://www.thunderbirdconn.com (Phoenix, AZ)

What you’re looking for is an outfit that has REAL cars as opposed to just brand new parts. They’ll most likely have some spare engines laying around that you could purchase. NW Falcon would be a good bet. I will also say… that you should consult your local parts suppliers. Old parts yards often have old parts laying around. Be sure to exhaust every local business first… then move farther away as needed. Also pay attention to anyone that deals with other Fords such as the Econoline, Fairlane, Ranchero, Comet, etc. Why? Those cars also used the 144 & 170 in the early 60s. Best wishes!

Q: How much should I ask for both doors from a 1964 Ford Falcon 2dr Hardtop?
These are very solid straight doors, freshly painted, not professional, I see one run for sure, thanx for the input!

A: Depends on how fast you want to sell them. Freshly painted means nothing since they’ll need to be repainted anyway to match whatever car they’ll be mounted to. You would have been better off not having them painted, gives the buyer a look at the original condition and verify no dents have been filled. $200 to $300 is reasonable, anything higher will take longer to sell. If you’re using free ads then time isn’t an issue.

Q: 1964 Ford Falcon Futura engine size?
I had a straight Falcon with a straight 6 a couple of years ago and it had a 170. I just bought a 1964 4-door Futura for $500 and need to rebuild the carb and was wondering if it comes stock with a 170 or a 200. I didn’t see it on the engine and can’t find out online.

A: All Ford Falcon engine blocks from 1960 thru 1964 were BLACK

The following color schemes pertain to the valve covers and air cleaner.

1964 – 144 c.i. – Ford Medium Blue
1964 – 170 c.i. – Ford Red

I would suggest this site to zone in on your answers:

Q: where can i find body parts for a 1964 or 1965 ford falcon 2 door hardtop?
i need a right rear quarter panel bad. a hood. right front fender as well. looked everywhere. cant seem to fine the quarter panel and i already looked on ebay. so please let me know .thanks

A: ..Look for a classic car salvage yard…http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A0oGkxsf3LlJwEgA6GxXNyoA?p=classic+car+salvage+yard&y=Search&fr=

Q: I have a 1964 ford falcon that has a serious vibration at higher rpm’s seems to be tranny any ideas?

A: Serious vibration problems, especially at high speeds, are almost always associated with wheels or front end. Get your wheels balanced and your front end aligned then see if you still have vibration problems.

Q: Can anyone out there please let me know where I can find a picture on the net of a 1964 XM Ford Falcon Ute.??
I would like the car to be original as possible.

A: Here’s a 1960 ute:

Q: 1964 Ford Falcon Futura. Please help?
I have a 1964 Ford Falcon Futura and I need a new air filter. I have been to just about every auto shop I can think of but no one stocks them. Does any know where I could find one?

Q: 1964 falcon seat belt anchorage location?

A: They are mounted to the vertical sides behind the drivers seat..just like in the Mustang..there is no frame, but they had seat belts as a option clear back in ‘58.. but were mandatory in the 65 Mustang..

Q: 1964 Ford Falcon windshield and headliner replace?
Hello!

I recently purchased a 1964 Ford Falcon Futura for my first car and it is in beautiful condition for the age and for the price. The only two problems that I have is that the windshield has a crack in it and the headliner needs to be replaced. I have a new windshield and a new headliner but don’t know of any places in Eugene/Springfield Oregon area that can replace both of these items. I have no idea how to do this and i wanted it professionally done anyways. Are there any places that anyone might know of for this? Please?

Thanks a lot!

Q: Hey whats up.. i have a 1964 ford falcon and put a 302 engine in it… need help1!!?
hey i have a 1964 ford falcon and i took the straight 6 out and out a 302 in it the 302 has 400 HP and a c4 tranny…. it is built i am jus wondering about the wiring.. i want to make sure its rite cuz can afford to have nothin wired wrong… can sombody give me information on the wiring… please…..

A: The wiring will be essentially the same on the V8 vs. the V6. Alternator, ignition and so fourth don’t change.
Be glad it’s a 1964 – this wiring is relatively simple compared to the newer electronic vehicles.
Sounds like a fun ride…..

Q: how much is a 1964 ford falcon van worth?

A: depends on its condition…contact an appraiser for those types of vehicles.

Q: Any good sites to find specs and info on 64 Ford Falcon?
Does anyone have any really good sites or information on 1964 ford falcons? I am looking for insight on value, common problems, things to look for when buying, how to take care of, gas mpg, safety ratings, etc.

A: Here are a bunch of them http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=1964+ford+falcons&fr=ush-ans

A great and must read article: <a href="http://www.whybuyusedcars.com/2010/03/most-dependable-cars-jd-power/1979 monte carlo for sale

Q: What battery does my 1979 Chevrolet Monte Carlo use?
My single-owner car has the trailer towing package.

My car was stolen; it was recovered, but the Owners Manual was not.

My car is now “driveway litter.” <grin>

Where can I find a –free– Owners Manual to download at once? Where is a good place to buy one?

—–Thank you, Jim

A: Go to Walmart and there is a computer there to look up the correct battery for your car.

While you’re there, they may have a vehicle specific repair manual too.

Q: What about my using E85 in my 1979 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
—–I have a single-owner 1979 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, special-ordered in 1978, with the larger engine.

It has about 109,000 true miles on it.

I have replaced the alternator and A/C a number of times.

Outside of minor tune-ups, the engine has not been touched.

I have been using E85 in it, thinking it was totally interchangable with regular 100% gasoline.

My milage is way down with E85, to about 7 MPG in big city driving.

What can I expect if I continue to use E85?

I appreciate the time and effort it takes you to help me.

—Jim
P.S.(1): I mean, what can I expect overall, not just on milage. Can my engine be damaged?
P.S.(2): ATTENTION: I mis-read the fuel pump. I am _not_ using E85: I am using gas with “less than or equal to 10% ethanol.” I am sorry I misled you. —Jim
P.S.(3): “monte”, I will check out your suggestion. Thank you. I have already put a locking gas cap on the car, thinking that might cure part of the problem; the MPG has strange ups and downs. <grin>

A: You should have no problems other than about 15-20% less gas milage with a 10% or less mixture. I drive a 77 Caprice with a 350 on this stuff and have had no fuel system problems in the three years I’ve had it. Going down to seven MPG indicates some kind of problem. If switching back to unmixed gas doesn’t cure the problem, you probably have a leak somewhere in the fuel system or a very bad carb. Four barrel Quadrajets are notorious for internal leaks and since it has a larger engine, it probably has a Quadrajet. Could be fuel pump, steel lines, hoses, or tank. Look under the right side of the car for any wet areas. The fuel line runs along the right frame rail. Also, look at the tank for any wet areas.

Q: 1979 blue chevrolet monte carlo?
need to find this car

A: Linda you can go to any chevrolet dealer and they will use there used car locater system to fine what your looking for.Best of luck.

Q: —–”The Club” stopped a man from stealing my car Monday. What is my next level of good protection?
—–My car is a single-owner 1979 Chevrolet Monte Carlo with about 109,000 true miles on it. I special ordered it in 1978. It was parked in my non-fenced apartment house parking lot. It had the regular “The Club” on it, with the wheels turned sideways. A floodlight was on it. About a year ago, before I got “The Club”, someone did steal my car from this same parking lot; the police recovered it. What can I add to the car to make it even more secure? —Jim

A: There are two ways to be ‘more secure’. One is to immobilize the car from starting and the other is an alarm system. Usually the two of these are used in combination…however…..

Install an ignition cutoff switch someplace in the ignition wiring circuit. It can be as simple as a small toggle switch (available for about $5) under the dash that can be flipped to interrupt the flow of current from the ignition switch to the starter. Or you can put a big cutoff switch on the heavy duty positive battery wire. That’s one where you open the hood and flip the lever or insert a key to disconnect power. Or you can invest in a “TriLock System” (new car dealers install them but their suggested retail price is steep unless you can get a deal).

A good aftermarket alarm and ignition cutoff say, made by Cobra or other manufacturers can be purchased at and installed by Best Buy for a couple of hundred dollars. A good one even has a remote that will chirp and tell you what part of the car is being messed with to alert you. you might consider installing something like Lo-Jack as well.
